Event Series Event Series: Haunted Hillsborough Stream and Scream

Haunted Hillsborough Stream and Scream

October 25, 2020 @ 6:30 pm - 8:00 pm

Sites visited include the Roulhac-Hamilton house and William Hooper’s gravesite in the Old Cemetery. Enoch Pugh (b. 1735 – d. 1771) will be your guide and storyteller. From Enoch, you’ll hear a brief history of Hillsborough, the Triangle’s oldest town, and a little about himself, including how he came to be hanged by the Governor right here in town, 249 years ago! Then he’ll lead you to the main attractions.

The Roulhac-Hamilton house is one of three haunted houses we visit on all of our tours, and it’s not a story you can hear from anyone else. That is because we dug it out of 1940s editions of the Elkin Tribune. The hero (and newspaper columnist) of our tale, Alan, grew up down the street from this house in the early 1900s, and wrote about his scary experiences with the house and its ghostly, perfumed young woman. Although he divulged the woman’s legend, he and his friends clearly exaggerated some parts of the story. It took research by our crack staff (of one) to correct the real identity of the person and the true circumstances behind her death, and burial nearby. Alas, we are still working to discover what scent she preferred.

Our second and last stop this night will be in the Old Cemetery. Enoch will give you a brief appreciation of the life and accomplishments of Mr. William Hooper, Esq., who was one of North Carolina’s three signers of the Declaration of Independence. Then Enoch will delve even deeper, into poor William’s afterlife, which includes disinterment (being dug up) and reburial in Greensboro, of all places. As a teaser of Enoch’s tale, ask yourself the following question: “If my body were removed from my home, would my spirit follow it or stay behind? And what would I do then?”

What better way to celebrate Halloween safely than by virtually venturing out to downtown Hillsborough to hear verified tales from a long-dead ghost who’s been here through it all?! We can’t give you any real candy, but we can treat you to a virtual visit of two of our spookiest stops, with a guarantee of no tricks!

[Assuming your wifi doesn’t go down.]

Once you have registered, you will receive a link to access the event through Zoom. Please note that this is a live event.

Plus, no masks required! (Enoch is partial to Day of the Dead styles)

Dates: Friday, Oct. 23, and Sunday, Oct. 25

Time: 6:30 pm ET

Price: $10 (per link not per person—squeeze as many people up to your screen as you like!)

Half of the proceeds from the tour will go to the Alliance for Historic Hillsborough.
