LAST FRIDAYS Art & Music Celebration July

July 28 @ 6:30 pm - 9:30 pm

Join us for the first LAST FRIDAYS Celebration of the 2017 Season put on the by the Hillsborough Arts Council. ‘Last Fridays’ features a free, live concert on the old courthouse lawn in Downtown. July’s performer is going to be Carlos Salvo. North Carolina’s Música Latina Carlos Salvo writes and plays music in the style of the Nueva Canción Chilena (New Chilean Song) or Trova genre that came out of Chile in the 1960’s. Victor Jara was the original trovador whose death at the hands of the Chilean military junta in 1973 sparked world-wide outrage. Pete Seeger said of Victor Jara “As long as we sing his songs, as long as his courage can inspire us to greater courage, Victor Jara will never die.” Carlos Salvo lists playing with Pete Seeger, many years after the death of Victor Jara, as one of the great moments of his life. As a boy growing up in Chile, Carlos was encouraged by his father to learn music. He still remembers the time when he was 9 years old and heard the great Cuban trovador, Silvio Rodriguez perform. It made a lasting impression and helped set his course as a trovador.

Last Fridays also features booths from local artists, musicians, craftspeople, and local food vendors on the courthouse lawn. Many art galleries, shops, restaurants, museums, and historic sites remain open later to welcome more visitors and patrons. Also, there are events and workshops on the South Lawn for kids.

Last Fridays also features a fabulous Art Walk where local businesses and venues host rotating exhibits. Grab your Art Walk map at the Hillsborough Arts Council store on Churton Street and tour the Town with art being your guide.
