DESCRIPTION:Experience American history through the unique perspective of one of North Carolina’s oldest and most historically significant towns\, with a guided walking tour of downtown Hillsborough. Established in 1754 as the seat of government for Orange County\, Hillsborough’s colonial legacy and signs of its importance in North Carolina and American history can be seen everywhere. \nThe tour begins at the Hillsborough Visitors Center\, located in the eighteenth century Alexander Dickson Farm House\, and guides visitors to a variety of historic places from the site of a 1790s African American-owned distillery to the 1840s Orange County Courthouse and the grave of one of North Carolina’s signers of the Declaration of Independence. \nThis is an in-person walking tour that sometimes crosses uneven terrain. Please plan to be walking or standing for the duration of the event\, wear comfortable walking shoes\, and bring a water bottle (plus your curiosity)! \nFor groups that are concerned about the length\, duration\, or terrain of the tour. SUMMARY:Indigenous Beading Class with Beverly Scarlett
DESCRIPTION:Learn the history of local Siouan-speaking nations and the culture of Indigenous beading. Participants will receive instruction from the Hon. Beverly Scarlett on simple beading techniques as they create unique beaded jewelry. Registration fees cover supplies including gemstones\, tools\, and other materials. Participants will leave with their creations and an understanding of the importance of beading in Indigenous culture. We maintain sacred burial spaces where these individuals and their descendants are interred. Sacred burial spaces include several likely ancient Indigenous burial mounds\, disrupted burial mounds\, a Maroon cemetery where Indigenous and Free People of Color are buried in the same space\, and the Hardscrabble Slave Cemetery.

Whether this concept is approached by mediums of acrylic\, wool\, collage or found objects\, all encourage the viewer to reflect on how our current societal systems harm each other and the environment. \nThe show runs Wednesday\, March 18 through Sunday\, April 12 at Margaret Lane Gallery\, 121 W Margaret Lane\, Hillsborough\, NC. \nThe opening reception — which is free and open to the general public — will be held Friday March 20\, 6 to 7:30.
