DESCRIPTION:SURF’S UP! Spring Break is here\, time to surf this wave of art basics for kids ages 8 to 10 who are seriously interested in art. Bonus\, students will be exposed to topics we will be deep diving in the RATS 2025 summer camps. \nLEARN: The essentials of drawing and painting\, with a focus on expression \nCREATE: A daily drawing or painting on paper \nMonday: ABSTRACTION  \nDo you love patterns and doodling? Each day will have a different focus\, dealing with line\, shape and shading\, patterns\, expression\, and texture used by famous abstract artists\, who were\, in turn\, greatly influenced by child art. \nTuesday: ANIMAL DRAWING \nFocussing on fundamentals\, we’ll be sharpening our pencils and our wits as we bring animals to life with pencils and charcoal. RAWR!! \nWednesday: STILL LIFE  \nWhat\, you hear a rustling in the flowers? Must be one of those dang animals we drew yesterday! Oh\, well\, give it a treat and hand it a brush while we slosh around in watercolors\, exploring composition\, color and shadow. \nThursday: PET PORTRAITS \nSince that animal from yesterday who was disrupting our still life studies won’t go away\, we’ll ask him to pose for us. We’ll also bring in photos of our favorite pets and draw them. \nFriday: SELF-PORTRAIT \nSay cheese and smile\, because after a week of these RATS Workshops\, you have become an official RAT. DESCRIPTION:An informal drop in session – you can come for some or all of the time — dedicated to gel printing. We have lots of gel print supplies – a variety of gel plates\, brayers\, papers\, mark and texture makers\, stencils\, and paints. \nYou are welcome to bring materials of your own if you’d like. \nThese sessions are designed for people with basic gel printing skills – there is NO instruction\, though there are individuals who can provide general assistance to people with rudimentary gel printing knowledge. \nIf you do not have gel printing experience\, it is highly recommended that you take basic gel printing lessons (and we can help with that). \nThe sessions are “pay as you please\,” with a $20 suggestion. We recognize everyone’s usage is different\, so please pay what you think is fair\, and you can afford. You can pay by cash or check (we set out a jar); if you prefer to pay by card\, we will have a QR code to a paylink you can use. \nFor adults and mature teens with basic gel printing experience. DESCRIPTION:Artists Ryann Carey and Pete Rodrigues will be exhibiting recent works in their upcoming show\, Drift\, which will be on display at the Hillsborough Gallery of Arts from April 22nd until May 25th. The opening reception will be on Friday\, April 25th from 6:00-9:00 pm. During the reception\, Ben Fisher will perform experimental/ambient music heavily influenced by\nNorth Carolina’s deep tradition of folk music\, on the patio in front of the gallery. \nPainter Ryann Carey considers Drift an apt title for the watercolor work she has created for this show. Says Carey “I am a bit of a wanderer both in place and mind. Often sidetracked by the light reflecting off an electric wire or the pattern of the ripples on water\, I let my observations lead the way for my watercolor paintings. These moments surround us\, often passing unnoticed\, in the midst of joy\, pain\, sadness\, hope.” \nWoodworker Pete Rodrigues creates not only unique handcrafted furniture\, but also art that hangs on the wall. Using select hardwoods which he cuts\, bends and shapes\, Rodrigues uses his imagination as well as his knowledge of the properties of his materials to achieve his original designs. “For me\, creating furniture as an art form is a process of visualizing what is possible- designing building\, and then letting it be used as function as much as form” says Rodrigues. “For my featured show this year I’m excited about the work I will be displaying. As I continue to work on them\, I’m enjoying how the process is more sculptural\, having a general idea and drifting with it.” \nDrift will be on display at the Hillsborough Gallery of Arts from April 22nd through May 25th with a talk by the artists in the gallery on Saturday\, May 10th at 4pm. \nAbout the Hillsborough Gallery of Arts:\nThe Hillsborough Gallery of Arts is owned and operated by 20 local artists and represents these established artists exhibiting contemporary fine art and fine craft. DESCRIPTION:In this 2 hour workshop students will learn the basics of the calligraphy alphabet\, how to connect various letters\, and how to add embellishments and flourishes to their work. We will go over the basics of how to use and treat common calligraphy tools such as brush pens\, pen nibs\, and how to stir and mix their own gouache and watercolor for calligraphy use.\n\nStudents will leave the workshop with their own completed calligraphy alphabet\, and a set of basic calligraphy tools to continue their practice of the art form.\n\nThis workshop is perfect for artists who are interested in doing their own wedding calligraphy\, invitation envelopes\, or similar work. Says Carey “I am a bit of a wanderer both in place and mind. Often sidetracked by the light reflecting off an electric wire or the pattern of the ripples on water\, I let my observations lead the way for my watercolor paintings. These moments surround us\, often passing unnoticed\, in the midst of joy\, pain\, sadness\, hope.” \nWoodworker Pete Rodrigues creates not only unique handcrafted furniture\, but also art that hangs on the wall. Says Carey “I am a bit of a wanderer both in place and mind. Often sidetracked by the light reflecting off an electric wire or the pattern of the ripples on water\, I let my observations lead the way for my watercolor paintings. These moments surround us\, often passing unnoticed\, in the midst of joy\, pain\, sadness\, hope.” \nWoodworker Pete Rodrigues creates not only unique handcrafted furniture\, but also art that hangs on the wall. Using select hardwoods which he cuts\, bends and shapes\, Rodrigues uses his imagination as well as his knowledge of the properties of his materials to achieve his original designs. “For me\, creating furniture as an art form is a process of visualizing what is possible- designing building\, and then letting it be used as function as much as form” says Rodrigues. “For my featured show this year I’m excited about the work I will be displaying. DESCRIPTION:The Hillsborough Gallery of Arts is proud to announce the opening of its new satellite space\, The Little Market\, with an inaugural exhibition by artist Adrienne Knowles. The show\, titled “Atmospherics\,” features a striking new body of abstract landscapes. A reception will be held Friday\, May 30th from 6-9pm in conjunction with the Art Walk. \nThe Little Market is dedicated to showcasing curated\, rotating exhibitions and creative collaborations\, providing a fresh space where artists and the community connect through art. They aim to create new opportunities for both established and emerging artists. \nIn “Atmospherics\,” Knowles explores the emotional and intuitive process of artmaking through a series of richly layered\, abstract landscapes. Working with acrylics\, oil\, cold wax medium and sometimes collage elements\, she builds compositions from color\, texture\, and memory—inviting viewers to experience the quiet mystery of landscapes that arise from within. \nAdrienne shares: “For the last several years\, I’ve focused on non-representational abstraction\, but recently this group of abstract landscapes has taken shape—unbidden at first\, then welcomed wholeheartedly.” \nThe Little Market is located at 118 N. SUMMARY:Elemental Form
DESCRIPTION:Artists Nell Chandler\, Ellie Reinhold\, and Evelyn Ward chose the title\, Elemental Form\, for their show\, connecting the lines\, shapes\, and textures in Ward’s pottery\, the designs etched into the metals of Chandler’s jewelry\, and the visual inspiration from nature for Reinhold’s paintings. \nNell Chandler began as a painter and printmaker. With the gift of a beginning class in jewelry making\, she fell in love with metal in her very first class. Eventually Chandler integrated her painting\, printmaking and jewelry fabrication into the work she creates today. Over the years she has been exploring new techniques and combines them into her work. Her “narrative” work tells stories filled with recurring figures and symbols. Often the wearer of a piece of her jewelry will share with her a story of their own. Those special moments affirm her choice of medium to share her art with the world. \nEllie Reinhold’s approach to painting is very loose and organic. The spark might be something very small and elemental\, a particular color combination\, a feeling of distance\, of contrast. Reinhold seeks through painting\, taking a leap of faith. A painting really develops from the act itself – application of color and line. With each blank canvas\, she starts from nowhere with nothing\, first adding random color\, then random marks. The title of the show – usually chosen long before the work begins – can also be a guiding force.  As she paints\, words or phrases come to mind\, and she finds her title in these words. For Reinhold the process is one of clarifying. Canvases begin chaotically\, unformed\, and she seeks the final image through the practice of painting. \nThis winter Evelyn Ward spent time experimenting with a new palette. Drawn to photos of abandoned factories\, with their intersecting and overlapping colors\, her new work references lines of the built environment. Loving what the passage of time and effects of weather do to surfaces\, Ward is using a technique called mono-print transferring to decorate the surfaces.  She paints slip onto cut pieces of paper and then transfers them onto the pot to create the design. Charles: The nomadic\, self-taught\, soul searching troubadour has effectively and dynamically been able to disassemble the idea of an artist needing to be accredited to be accomplished. With an old soul and a fresh perspective\, he has cultivated soundscapes and wave therapy on some of the musical worlds biggest stages such as Newport Jazz Festival\, TEDx\, and NPR while simultaneously staying steadfast in his belief of authentic quality over quantity; and it is with that stance that Charles has acquired cosigns from the likes of GRAMMY AWARD winning artists such as Son Little\, Cedric Burnside\, and Hip-Hop legends Digable Planets and Arrested Development; of which he has been direct support on a string of sold out shows.
