SUMMARY:Preservation Hillsborough Pottery Sale
DESCRIPTION:Preservation Hillsborough (PH) announces a special sale of beautiful NC pottery\, lovingly\ncollected over a 25-year period from the storied potteries of Seagrove\, NC and donated to PH\nby Robert and Callie Connor. \nThe sale includes a variety of styles and items selected for their beauty and utility\, primarily\nfrom the Cole’s\, Seagrove\, and Dover Potteries. The sale will be open from 9 – 4 on May 14 at\nthe historic Norwood-Jones Law Office on Court Street in Hillsborough. \nAll proceeds will benefit the restoration of Dickerson Chapel AME Church\, whose structure\nincorporates the town’s oldest surviving public building — its second courthouse\, built in 1790\nand moved in 1845 two blocks north. The building was used seqentually as a Baptist church\, a\nmeeting place for abolitionists\, a workshop for building coffins\, a freedman’s school\, and a\nplace of worship and a congregation of the American Methodist Episcopal church\, which it\nremains today. The 230-year-old infrastructure is in great need of restoration. Preservation\nHillsborough\, (PreservationHillsborough.org) which has served for 50 years to preserve\nsignificant structures in the town\, is raising funds needed to see the structure safely through its\nthird century. All proceeds from pottery sale will go to the preservation of Dickerson Chapel.

SUMMARY:253rd Regulator Remembrance Day Event
DESCRIPTION:The 253rd Annual Regulator Remembrance Day Event will take place Wednesday\, June 19\, 2024\, at 6 p.m.\, at the Regulator Historic Marker site in Cameron Park\, 200 East King Street\, Hillsborough\, NC\, 27278. \nThis year’s event marks the 253rd anniversary of the date on June 19\, 1771 when six early American patriots were executed at the site by English colonial Governor William Tryon on the charge of High Treason against the King of England for questioning English colonial authority as part of the Regulator Rebellion. \nSince 1771\, descendants and the general public have quietly visited the site to lay flowers there in remembrance of those brave patriots. That tradition has continued for over 250 years. A mammoth stone slab was placed at the site in the late 18th / early 19th century as a place for descendants and the public to lay flowers. In weathered stone\, it silently pledges\, “We will never forget\, we will always remember.” \nMore formal commemoration events were revived again in 2013 by Scott Washington\, former Assistant Director of the Orange County Historical Museum and Hillsborough Historian. The annual Regulator Remembrance Event is a way for descendants and all who care about this history to intentionally remember these early patriots. \nThe 253rd anniversary ceremonies will include introduction of special guests\, historical remarks\, reading of the names of those who were executed on this date\, a tolling of the bell\, followed by a chance for the public to bring and lay flowers at the Regulator Marker just as people have done for over 250 years. \nScott Washington\, Hillsborough Historian\, Representatives of Alamance Battleground Historic Site\, elected officials\, descendants of the original Regulators\, and many others are expected to be present at this popular event\, too. \nThe event is free and open to the public

SUMMARY:An Outlandish Morning with Lord John Grey at Moorefields Estate
DESCRIPTION:SOLD OUT: If you would like to join our Outlandish Waitlist\, please email our Site Coordinator at Ben@historichillsborough.org. \nTake a trip to 1700s Hillsborough with Lord John Grey. Start your morning exploring the historic Moorefields estate\, once owned by Colonel John Gray. Conclude your early afternoon by following the paths of Jamie and Claire through the downtown streets. \n10:30-11:30am – Walking Tour at Moorefields- Join Lord John Grey at the historic Moorefields for some traditional English refreshments of biscuits\, scones\, and tea as you walk the grounds. In the fourth and fifth books of the Outlander Series\, Drums of Autumn and The Fiery Cross\, as well as in the fifth through seventh seasons of the hit TV series based on the books\, the main characters settle in a fictional Scottish community in North Carolina. The Frasers’ story intertwines with the realities of life in North Carolina in the 1700s and that of the Regulator uprising in and around Hillsborough\, making Hillsborough a natural location for this event. Moorefields sits on land originally granted to Hillsborough’s “real” John Gray\, a Colonel whose life circumstances overlap with the stories of both Lord John Grey and Jamie Fraser. After walking the grounds\, get a sneak peak of the 1785 home that still stands on the property. After exploring the house\, you’ll rejoin Lord Grey in historic Downtown.\n*Driving between Moorefields and Downtown takes about 10-15 minutes \n11:45-1:00pm – Historic Downtown Walking Tour: Rejoin Lord John at the Hillsborough Visitor’s Center before walking Churton and King streets to visit the places the Frasers would have seen as they navigated the colonial legal system and the Regulator Uprising of the 1770s . \nThis tour is in collaboration with the Friends of Historic Moorefields \n– Agenda \n\nGates Open at Moorefields at 10:15am\nA Walk with Lord John Begins Promptly at 10:30am\nTour the Lower Level of the Home Following the Walk\nDowntown Walking Tour Begins at 11:45am at the Dickson House (Hillsborough Visitors Center)\nTour concludes at 1pm\n\n– Tickets \n\nTickets can be purchased here: https://www.zeffy.com/ticketing/8a6c78f1-2874-423c-9e72-4a36dfcf8f63
