DESCRIPTION:*What: The Annual Bill of Rights Day Community Bell Ringing Event \nWhen: Bill of Rights Day\, Sunday\, December 15\, 2024 \nTime: 2:00 PM  to 2:04 PM\, EST \nWhere: In front of Hillsborough’s historic 1845 courthouse\, 104 East King Street\, Hillsborough\, NC 27278. \nDetails: 233 seconds (3 minutes\, 53 seconds) of simultaneous community bell ringing to mark the 233rd anniversary of when the first ten amendments became part of the U. S. Constitution\, December 15\, 1791. \nWhy: In the summer of 1788\, delegates from across North Carolina met in Hillsborough\, NC (“Birthplace of the Bill of Rights”) to consider ratifying what was then the “new” U.S. Constitution. NC’s Constitutional Convention changed history instead. NC’s Constitutional Convention was the only one of the thirteen states to vote to postpone ratifying the U.S. Constitution until provisions were made for introducing a Bill of Rights to Congress and the ratifying states. That became the “tipping point” for why Congress took up the issue and why amendments were added. On December 15\, 1791\, ten amendments became part of the U. S. Constitution\, the ones we call the “Bill of Rights” protecting essential liberties and legal fairness. \nDetails: To mark the historic anniversary of when the Bill of Rights became part of the U. S. Constitution and every citizen’s birthright\, Hillsborough\, NC marks the “last great holiday” of the calendar year with Community Bell Ringing. We ring bells for as many seconds as the Bill of Rights has been in force. For the 233rd anniversary in 2024\, that means 233 seconds (3 minutes\, 53 seconds) of continuous simultaneous bell ringing starting at 2:00PM and ending at 2:03:53 PM (almost 4 minutes). Unique in the nation\, since 2012 the sound of community bell ringing has been heard across Hillsborough’s historic district on Bill of Rights Day. In past years\, church bells in the belfries of five of the historic churches (Dickerson Chapel AME\, First Baptist of Hillsborough\, Hillsborough Presbyterian\, Hillsborough United Methodist\, St. Matthews Episcopal) in Hillsborough’s Historic District have rung at the same time along with the general public\, People of all ages\, with bells of all sizes\, are invited to “bring bells\, ring bells” too  in front of the 1845 historic courthouse where there has been a courthouse since Colonial Times when North Carolina was a British Colony to when it became a State and the Bill of Rights first became part of the U. S. Constitution on December 15\, 1791 and continues today. The public is invited to “bring bells\, ring bells!” and join the bell ringing\, too\, too! It’s a great way to mark the “last great American holiday” of the Calendar year and gives new meaning to the age old refrain\, “Let Freedom Ring!” It’s Short\, Fun\, Festive\, Non Partisan\, No Speeches\, No parades. DESCRIPTION:THE HILLSBOROUGH CLASSIC FILM SOCIETY will present the French-Canadian film Mon Oncle Antoine at 2pm Sunday\, December 15\, at the Passmore Center\, 103 Meadowlands Drive in Hillsborough. It’s in Canadian French\, with English subtitles. There will be an introduction before the film and a discussion afterwards. As always\, the film and the popcorn are free. \nIf you would like to attend\, please sign up before 3 pm\, December 13th\, by calling the Passmore Center at 919 245-2015 or by going to our website: \n      hillsboroughclassicfilms.com. \nThe Passmore opens its doors and provides help for the Society on the weekend when they are normally closed\, but they need to have some indication in advance that the audience will be large enough to justify the expense. Please sign up if you are thinking of coming. \nMon Oncle Antoine is set in the asbestos region of Quebec. The action takes place during Christmas Eve and Christmas Day in a period just before the Asbestos Strike of 1949 and nearly a decade before the beginning of the Quiet Revolution that turned Quebec from a conservative\, church-dominated province\, with a deadly asbestos mining industry largely in the hands of English-speaking outsiders\, to a secular social democracy tending toward separatism. \nAlthough it is not well known in this country\, Mon Oncle Antoine is listed as the greatest Canadian film of all times in a number of polls\, including three of the Sight and Sound polls\, and has won a number of Canadian and international awards. Roger Ebert included it on his 2008 list of the greatest movies.

DESCRIPTION:“Pete the Cat: Original Art by James Dean” on view in Hillsborough\, NC\, 1/3/25 through 4/3/25\nHillsborough\, NC – The Alliance for Historic Hillsborough and Mike’s Art Truck are excited to present “Pete the Cat: Original Art by James Dean.” This selection of Dean’s popular “CAT-themed” paintings will be on display from January 3 through April 3\, 2025\, at the Alexander Dickson House\, the historic building which houses the Hillsborough Visitors Center. \nArtist James Dean\, self-taught creator of that iconic blue feline\, Pete the Cat\, graciously shares a unique collection of his original paintings in this exhibition. The show is expected to confirm once again that “Everybody Loves Pete.” Exhibition artwork is available for purchase directly through Mike’s Art Truck. SUMMARY:2024 Homes for the Holidays Hillsborough Gingerbread Creations On Display
DESCRIPTION:The annual walking tour of unconventional gingerbread exhibits returns to Hillsborough’s downtown shop windows this holiday season from December 7 to January 5.  The event celebrates artistic sculpture: creations can be made of any material as long as the visible elements are edible. The public is invited to submit creative interpretations of this year’s theme\, “Winter Wonderland” within the Adult or Youth & Family categories; registration is open Nov. 1-27. Voting for People’s Choice Awards will take place through Dec 20 and winners will be announced at the town’s Solstice Lantern Walk on Dec 21.  \n
