Established in 1754 as the seat of government for Orange County\, Hillsborough’s colonial legacy and signs of its importance in North Carolina and American history can be seen everywhere. \nThe tour begins at the Hillsborough Visitors Center\, located in the eighteenth century Alexander Dickson Farm House\, and guides visitors to a variety of historic places from the site of a 1790s African American-owned distillery to the 1840s Orange County Courthouse and the grave of one of North Carolina’s signers of the Declaration of Independence. \nThis is an in-person walking tour that sometimes crosses uneven terrain. Please plan to be walking or standing for the duration of the event\, wear comfortable walking shoes\, and bring a water bottle (plus your curiosity)! \nFor groups that are concerned about the length\, duration\, or terrain of the tour. Bonus\, students will be exposed to topics we will be deep diving in the RATS 2025 summer camps. \nLEARN: The essentials of drawing and painting\, with a focus on expression \nCREATE: A daily drawing or painting on paper \nMonday: ABSTRACTION  \nDo you love patterns and doodling? Each day will have a different focus\, dealing with line\, shape and shading\, patterns\, expression\, and texture used by famous abstract artists\, who were\, in turn\, greatly influenced by child art. \nTuesday: ANIMAL DRAWING \nFocussing on fundamentals\, we’ll be sharpening our pencils and our wits as we bring animals to life with pencils and charcoal. RAWR!! \nWednesday: STILL LIFE  \nWhat\, you hear a rustling in the flowers? Must be one of those dang animals we drew yesterday! Oh\, well\, give it a treat and hand it a brush while we slosh around in watercolors\, exploring composition\, color and shadow. \nThursday: PET PORTRAITS \nSince that animal from yesterday who was disrupting our still life studies won’t go away\, we’ll ask him to pose for us. We’ll also bring in photos of our favorite pets and draw them. \nFriday: SELF-PORTRAIT \nSay cheese and smile\, because after a week of these RATS Workshops\, you have become an official RAT. In just two hours\, you’ll hear about all 16\, and even visit some of the subjects in the town cemetery. Along the way you’ll meet surveyors\, merchants\, generals\, governors\, lawyers\, scientists\, enslaved people\, and much more. \nIt turns out the “cute” little town of Hillsborough has had a very outsized impact on Orange County\, North Carolina\, the United States\, and even the world. \nTours start at 10:00 AM\, we will meet at the Arch across the street from Weaver Street Market (228 S. We have lots of gel print supplies – a variety of gel plates\, brayers\, papers\, mark and texture makers\, stencils\, and paints. \nYou are welcome to bring materials of your own if you’d like. \nThese sessions are designed for people with basic gel printing skills – there is NO instruction\, though there are individuals who can provide general assistance to people with rudimentary gel printing knowledge. \nIf you do not have gel printing experience\, it is highly recommended that you take basic gel printing lessons (and we can help with that). \nThe sessions are “pay as you please\,” with a $20 suggestion. Throughout her over-40-year career\, Teepa has led numerous local\, regional\, national\, and international aging initiatives. In light of the growing prevalence of Alzheimer’s disease and other types of dementia worldwide\, Teepa has partnered with countless families\, communities\, healthcare organizations\, and educational programs to address evolving needs in dementia care. Together\, Teepa and her partners have made profound impacts on the lives of people living with the disease and their myriad caregivers locally and globally. Members of the dementia care community credit Teepa’s teaching for shifting public awareness\, attitudes\, practice\, and research toward a more positive approach to care\, improving life for everyone involved. \nRegardless of her work settings\, Teepa has called this community home for over fifty years. She came to North Carolina to attend Duke University then UNC-CH. She and her husband raised their family in the Hillsborough area and now enjoy watching their grandchildren discover all our community has to offer. That is why Teepa believes Hillsborough is the perfect place for the next collaborative\, local endeavor. \nPurpose of the Foundation \nOur purpose is to inspire hope\, save lives\, and improve quality of life for people living with brain changes (caused by dementia or another brain condition) and the community as a whole. The new non-profit organization will \n\nbuild on Hillsborough’s prior progress toward becoming a “dementia friendly community” and expand the concept of “dementia friendly” to a fully inclusive community-based model\nimprove access to state-of-the-art information\, services\, and support so that all local residents may live fully in a neurodiverse community\n\nWhat is the Snow Approach? \nThe Snow Approach is a three-pronged approach to care for neurocognitive conditions: \n\nHow Human Brains Work\nChanges Likely with Neurodegenerative or Neurodiverse Conditions\nSkills to Maintain or Build POSITIVE Relationships\n\nThe Foundation’s Programs \n\n\n\nBrain Change Coalition – conversations\, consultations\, education\, engagement opportunities\, and training in the Snow Approach\nSnow Approach Award Program – For Local Professionals – additional training and formal recognition for those who wish to develop a neurodiversity-affirming practice\, along with a registry accessible to anyone seeking trained providers\n\n\n\n\n\n\nOur Gathering Place – an open and inclusive community center and possible living space where learning happens\, purposeful engagement opportunities abound\, and people thrive with different strengths and abilities through all stages of life.\n\n\n\nOur goal is to sustain our centrally located world-class center for inclusive community living. SUMMARY:UPCOMING CLASSIC FILM: SANSHO THE BAILIFF
DESCRIPTION:THE HILLSBOROUGH CLASSIC FILM SOCIETY will present the Japanese film Sansho the Bailiff at 2pm Sunday\, April 13\, at the Passmore Center\, 103 Meadowlands Drive in Hillsborough. There are English subtitles. There will be an introduction before the film and a discussion afterwards led by filmmaker and Duke professor Gary Hawkins. As always\, the film and the popcorn are free and everyone is welcome. If you would like to attend\, please sign up before 3 pm Friday\, April 11\, by calling the Passmore Center at 919 245-2015 or by going to our website: <Hillsboroughclassicfilms.com>. There’s more information about the film\, the director\, and Professor Hawkins at the website\, including links to trailers and a link to the classic Japanese short story on which the film is based. The Passmore opens its doors and provides help for the Society on the weekend when they are normally closed\, but they need to have some indication in advance that the audience will be large enough to justify the expense. We ask that you please sign up if you are thinking of coming.
