DESCRIPTION:Experience American history through the unique perspective of one of North Carolina’s oldest and most historically significant towns\, with a guided walking tour of downtown Hillsborough. Established in 1754 as the seat of government for Orange County\, Hillsborough’s colonial legacy and signs of its importance in North Carolina and American history can be seen everywhere. \nThe tour begins at the Hillsborough Visitors Center\, located in the eighteenth century Alexander Dickson Farm House\, and guides visitors to a variety of historic places from the site of a 1790s African American-owned distillery to the 1840s Orange County Courthouse and the grave of one of North Carolina’s signers of the Declaration of Independence. \nThis is an in-person walking tour that sometimes crosses uneven terrain. Please plan to be walking or standing for the duration of the event\, wear comfortable walking shoes\, and bring a water bottle (plus your curiosity)! \nFor groups that are concerned about the length\, duration\, or terrain of the tour. Guided tours will be offered Thursday & Friday at 1:00pm and 2:30pm. Tour times for Saturday take place at 11:00am\, 1:00pm\, and 2:30pm. DESCRIPTION:Smudge It! Some Shady Charcoal Workshops with Wendy Aldwyn. A 5 week workshop series\, you can take the full series\, or individual sessions … \nJoin us 6-8pm Wednesdays starting September 24 thru October 29\, 2025\, when we explore the dark\, bioluminescent caverns of our minds with charcoal drawings on paper. Forces of good and evil will be held in sway by our wild imaginings. We’ll explore realism\, surrealism and abstract applications of darkness and light\, taking a look at the use of charcoal by contemporary artists as well as the old masters. \nThe first hour of each session\, we’ll warm up by practicing basic charcoal techniques and tricks\, and learning how to draw with the eraser. The second hour we’ll work on finishing a themed charcoal drawing. \nSeptember 24: Let’s Face It \nCharcoal portraiture. We’ll study basic facial bone construction starting by using a realistic skull as a reference\, then fill in the eyes and other facial features with a focus on expression. \nOctober 1: Creature Features \nLooking at clouds\, fur\, feathers and scales\, and creating abstract compositions with evocative combinations of these textures. \nOctober 8: Pet Portraits \nLearn how to use the projector to transfer an image of your pet to paper\, then render it in charcoal. (If you don’t have a picture of your pet available\, an assortment of animal pictures will be available to choose from). \nOctober 15: Ready\, SET\, Go! \nThe set was all important back in the heyday of film noir and German Expressionism. We’ll create some abstract\, angular set designs for our own imagined theatrical masterworks by warping perspective and making dramatic geometric use of light and dark. \nOctober 22: Imagine a Dragon \nStudying the relationship of the animal body to machines\, and using some medieval imagery as inspiration\, we’ll create our own bionic assemblages of creatures\, and create our own fiery dragon. \nOctober 29: Monster Mash-up \nNot all is goodness and light\, and not all is evil and darkness. Guided tours will be offered Thursday & Friday at 1:00pm and 2:30pm. Tour times for Saturday take place at 11:00am\, 1:00pm\, and 2:30pm. DESCRIPTION:Join Beverly Scarlett for a transformative overnight retreat exploring the history of the land\, water sources\, and the first occupants of Orange and Durham counties\, filled with live music\, movement\, and storytelling. Together\, we’ll learn about the lives of Indigenous\, Maroon\, Slave\, and Free People of Color who occupied land along the Historic Indian Trading Path now called Mason Road\, and how that history shapes the place many of us call home today. Footsteps Ahead of Ours is an opportunity to gain knowledge that has been erased and rewritten in familiar historical narratives\, in a way that you’ve never experienced history before. \nAs part of the retreat\, participants will have the opportunity to visit sacred burial spaces maintained by Indigenous Memories\, including several likely ancient Indigenous burial mounds\, disrupted burial mounds\, a Maroon cemetery where Indigenous and Free People of Color are buried in the same space\, and the Hardscrabble Slave Cemetery. During a 3-mile historical hike\, Beverly will share the art of dowsing\, instruction on identifying Indigenous burials and slave burials. \nParticipants will also learn about and have the opportunity to take part in the The Hillsborough Legacy Project\, which explores the genetic and historical stories of the Hardscrabble/Pleasant Grove Plantation in Hillsborough\, North Carolina\, as well as how this history impacts the modern health of descendants. \nThe retreat begins at 5:00 pm on Friday and ends at 7:00 pm on Saturday. The registration fee of $249 will cover lodging\, meals\, and the retreat program. DESCRIPTION:The brothers of Eagle Lodge #19 are inviting the community to our historic Masonic Hall building for guided tours from 6-8:30 pm on the last Friday of each month from April to September. Tours are ongoing\, so stop by anytime during Last Friday.\n\nYou will begin with a history of our lot\, located along the Occaneechi Trading Path\, where the Regulators destroyed Edmund Fanning’s house in 1770. We will then welcome you inside and guide you through one of the earliest and most significant Masonic buildings in North America. Designed by North Carolina state architect William Nichols in the early 1820s\, our Greek Revival lodge building was constructed to be a lodge under the supervision of master builders Samuel Hancock and John Berry and was completed in 1825. Inside\, you will learn about the fire that nearly destroyed the building in 1945\, the unique arrangement of masonic lodge rooms\, some of the meaning behind our iconic symbols\, our connections to the history of UNC\, the design feature that was removed from our roof during the Civil War\, as well as the building’s many additional uses. For example\, the building once doubled as the Hillsborough Opera House and during several wars the building served as a hospital or preparatory for the American Red Cross.\n\nWe will also have cold bottled water and sodas for guests\, with additional activities throughout the summer in conjunction with the Arts Council’s Last Fridays celebrations. Tours are free\, though donations to our Historic Eagle Lodge Foundation are greatly appreciated and will contribute to ongoing preservation of our building.

DESCRIPTION:Make a Difference: The Tarwheels donate all proceeds\, in excess of expenses\, to bicycling-related activities in our community.  In the past 6 years we have donated more than $15\,000/yr.  Recent recipients include Triangle Bike Works\, Bridge2Sports Adaptive Cycling Program\, Durham Bike Cooperative\, the Special Olympics Cycling Team\, and the Carrboro Bicycle Coalition. \nFood: The Tarwheels take pride in the volunteers who contribute time\, energy\, and the tour’s hallmark homemade cookies and baked goods. They have made BikeFest one of the most enjoyable bicycling events in North Carolina.  Refreshments will be provided at the end of the ride\, but all riders are still encouraged to carry their own water bottles. \nRoutes and Support: BikeFest offers a choice of 4 routes/rides: a 35-mile half metric\, a 45-mile\, a 62-mile metric century\, and a 100-mile English century. The 35\, 45\, and 62 routes have 2 rest stops while the 100-mile route has 4 rest stops. All 3 routes have water\, soda\, and cookies 10 miles before the end.  This is a fully-supported ride with rest stops\, refreshments\, and restrooms.  Routes are clearly marked and patrolled by SAG vehicles.  Mechanical support (repair) is provided on a cost-of-parts-only basis \nSAFETY REQUIREMENTS\nANSI\, Snell\, ASTM\, or COSC approved helmets are required.  The Activities will be held on public roads which will remain open to motor vehicle traffic.  Each rider is expected to obey traffic laws and is responsible for his or her own safety.  Earbuds\, phones\, and mp3 players must not be used while riding. \nPAYMENT\nYou can pay by credit card or bank debit (via Paypal). \nNO ON-SITE REGISTRATION \nREGISTER AT: https://www.bikereg.com/bikefest \n

DESCRIPTION:Experience American history through the unique perspective of one of North Carolina’s oldest and most historically significant towns\, with a guided walking tour of downtown Hillsborough. Established in 1754 as the seat of government for Orange County\, Hillsborough’s colonial legacy and signs of its importance in North Carolina and American history can be seen everywhere. \nThe tour begins at the Hillsborough Visitors Center\, located in the eighteenth century Alexander Dickson Farm House\, and guides visitors to a variety of historic places from the site of a 1790s African American-owned distillery to the 1840s Orange County Courthouse and the grave of one of North Carolina’s signers of the Declaration of Independence. \nThis is an in-person walking tour that sometimes crosses uneven terrain. Please plan to be walking or standing for the duration of the event\, wear comfortable walking shoes\, and bring a water bottle (plus your curiosity)! \nFor groups that are concerned about the length\, duration\, or terrain of the tour. DESCRIPTION:Located in Hillsborough\, North Carolina\, Ayr Mount strikes a startling figure in the historical town. The 1815 federal\, masonry edifice was the first of its kind in this once bustling trade town\, and thanks to the preservation efforts of our founder Richard Jenrette\, remains well preserved with several original family objects on display. \nCAHPT invites you to explore the site to learn about the design\, construction\, and maintenance of the estate as well as the lives of those\, enslaved and free\, who crafted and occupied the extravagant home and landscape from 1820 to 2018. \nVisitors are welcome to explore the site select Thursdays\, Fridays\, and Saturdays April through November. Guided tours will be offered Thursday & Friday at 1:00pm and 2:30pm. Tour times for Saturday take place at 11:00am\, 1:00pm\, and 2:30pm. All guests must purchase tickets in advance. \nTickets can be bought here: https://secure.jenrette.org/nx/portal/neonevents/events?path=%2Fportal%2Fevents \nThis is a potentially strenuous tour which includes climbing stairs\, traversing uneven terrain\, and enduring uncomfortable weather conditions and the presence of bugs or other wildlife. We regret that we cannot be responsible for those needing assistance and encourage all guests to dress accordingly. No food or beverages are allowed in the houses with the exception of a closed bottle of water.
