SUMMARY:Book Release: Eryk Pruitt's 'Blood Red Summer' Releases on May 14\, 2024
DESCRIPTION:The crime novelist’s latest will be launched at Hillsborough’s Yonder in conversation with Dale Edwards \n\nOn May 14\, 2024\, Eryk Pruitt’s (Something Bad Wrong\, What We Reckon) latest crime novel\, Blood Red Summer\, will be released and the novelist is hosting a book launch at Yonder in Hillsborough. The author will be in conversation with the News of Orange editor\, Dale Edwards\, starting at 5:30pm. The two will share a conversation on stage\, a reading from the author\, and a Q&A with the audience. \n\nBlood Red Summer tells the story of true crime podcaster Jess Keeler who works with a documentary crew in a small town to expose the true story of the 1984 Lake Castor Sniper. The sniper terrorized the historically Black part of the old mill town\, claiming five lives with little attention from the press or the police. But when journalist Hal Broadstreet was killed\, the community quickly mobilized and arrested a suspect. Forty years later\, however\, Jess believes they may have arrested the wrong man. As evidence emerges\, pointing to a false confession and further horrific crimes from the era\, Jess closes in on the truth—and risks landing in the sights of the true sniper. \n\nThe Library Journal says\, in a starred review\, that “the intriguing sequel to Something Bad Wrong utilizes dual timelines and three voices that contrast styles of crime coverage in a Southern noir story of violence\, corruption\, and racism. For fans of true-crime podcasts or S.A. Cosby.” Cosby\, himself\, referred to it as “very\, very good writing\,” while author Ed Kurtz (The Rib from Which I Remake the World) called it “taut\, twisty\, heartbreaking\, and flat-out brilliant.” \n\nBlood Red Summer is published by Thomas & Mercer and will be available at bookstores\, online retailers\, and wherever you buy books. Notably\, Hillsborough’s Purple Crow Books\, McIntyre’s in Pittsboro\, and The Regulator in Durham share a great relationship with the author. McIntyre’s will be holding a book release on June 15 with Pruitt\, SA Cosby\, and Rob Hart. \n\n“I’m so excited about this event\,” News of Orange editor Dale Edwards said in a Facebook post. “Blood Red Summer is an absolute page-turner. It’s going to be fun and I’m going to be a nervous wreck!” \n\nYonder: Southern Cocktails and Brew has hosted several literary events in their cocktail lounge\, making it a mainstay in North Carolina’s literary scene. It was recently lauded by Our State’s podcast with Wiley Cash for its Noir at the Bar readings which feature eight authors performing slices of their rowdier selections. It’s also hosted several book launches and often features “literary cocktails” on its drink menus\, such as Dorothy Parker’s Algonquin\, Raymond Chandler’s Champagne Cocktail\, and Hemingway’s Daiquiri. \n\n“It’s a natural fit\,” says author and Yonder co-owner Eryk Pruitt. “Books and booze go together like Texas and chainsaw massacres.” \n\nWHAT: Book launch for Blood Red Summer by Eryk Pruitt in conversation with Dale Edwards of The News of Orange. \nWHEN: Tuesday\, May 14\, 2024\, at 5:30pm \nWHERE: Yonder: Southern Cocktails & Brew at 114 W King St\, Hillsborough\, NC\, 27278 \nhttp://yonderbarnc.com

SUMMARY:Preservation Hillsborough Pottery Sale
DESCRIPTION:Preservation Hillsborough (PH) announces a special sale of beautiful NC pottery\, lovingly\ncollected over a 25-year period from the storied potteries of Seagrove\, NC and donated to PH\nby Robert and Callie Connor. \nThe sale includes a variety of styles and items selected for their beauty and utility\, primarily\nfrom the Cole’s\, Seagrove\, and Dover Potteries. The sale will be open from 9 – 4 on May 14 at\nthe historic Norwood-Jones Law Office on Court Street in Hillsborough. \nAll proceeds will benefit the restoration of Dickerson Chapel AME Church\, whose structure\nincorporates the town’s oldest surviving public building — its second courthouse\, built in 1790\nand moved in 1845 two blocks north. The building was used seqentually as a Baptist church\, a\nmeeting place for abolitionists\, a workshop for building coffins\, a freedman’s school\, and a\nplace of worship and a congregation of the American Methodist Episcopal church\, which it\nremains today. The 230-year-old infrastructure is in great need of restoration. Preservation\nHillsborough\, (PreservationHillsborough.org) which has served for 50 years to preserve\nsignificant structures in the town\, is raising funds needed to see the structure safely through its\nthird century. All proceeds from pottery sale will go to the preservation of Dickerson Chapel.

SUMMARY:Ayr Mount Tours
DESCRIPTION:Located in Hillsborough\, North Carolina\, Ayr Mount strikes a startling figure in the historical town. The 1815 federal\, masonry edifice was the first of its kind in this once bustling trade town\, and thanks to the preservation efforts of our founder Richard Jenrette\, remains well preserved with several original family objects on display. \nCAHPT invites you to explore the site to learn about the design\, construction\, and maintenance of the estate as well as the lives of those\, enslaved and free\, who crafted and occupied the extravagant home and landscape from 1820 to 2018. \nVisitors are welcome to explore the site select Thursdays\, Fridays\, and Saturdays April through November. Guided tours will be offered Thursday & Friday at 1:00pm and 2:30pm. Tour times for Saturday take place at 11:00am\, 1:00pm\, and 2:30pm. All guests must purchase tickets in advance. \nTickets can be purchased here: https://secure.classicalamericanhomes.org/nx/portal/neonevents/events#/events/ \nThis is a potentially strenuous tour which includes climbing stairs\, traversing uneven terrain\, and enduring uncomfortable weather conditions and the presence of bugs or other wildlife. We regret that we cannot be responsible for those needing assistance and encourage all guests to dress accordingly.
