SUMMARY:Masonic Hall Guided Tours
DESCRIPTION:The brothers of Eagle Lodge #19 are inviting the community to our historic Masonic Hall building for guided tours from 6-8:30 pm on the last Friday of each month from April to September. Tours are ongoing\, so stop by anytime during Last Friday.\n\nYou will begin with a history of our lot\, located along the Occaneechi Trading Path\, where the Regulators destroyed Edmund Fanning’s house in 1770. We will then welcome you inside and guide you through one of the earliest and most significant Masonic buildings in North America. Designed by North Carolina state architect William Nichols in the early 1820s\, our Greek Revival lodge building was constructed to be a lodge under the supervision of master builders Samuel Hancock and John Berry and was completed in 1825. Inside\, you will learn about the fire that nearly destroyed the building in 1945\, the unique arrangement of masonic lodge rooms\, some of the meaning behind our iconic symbols\, our connections to the history of UNC\, the design feature that was removed from our roof during the Civil War\, as well as the building’s many additional uses. For example\, the building once doubled as the Hillsborough Opera House and during several wars the building served as a hospital or preparatory for the American Red Cross.\n\nWe will also have cold bottled water and sodas for guests\, with additional activities throughout the summer in conjunction with the Arts Council’s Last Fridays celebrations. Tours are free\, though donations to our Historic Eagle Lodge Foundation are greatly appreciated and will contribute to ongoing preservation of our building.

The opening reception will be held Friday\, June 27th from 6-9pm. \nA native North Carolinian\, Holden Richards works exclusively with large format film cameras\, many over a century old. His images—captured along the creeks and rivers of Orange and Durham counties—are printed using historic processes such as Kallitype and salt printing. With a meditative eye and a deep reverence for the natural world\, Richards’ work offers viewers an intimate and timeless connection to place. \nJessica Poland uses monoprinting and casein painting to explore the beauty and fragility of the environment. Her luminous works are inspired by memories of nature in her native Indiana and decades spent in North Carolina’s Piedmont. Mysterious marks\, textured surfaces\, and the interplay of light and color speak to her fascination with the living world and our relationship to it. \nTogether\, Richards and Poland invite visitors to slow down\, look closely\, and rediscover the subtle landmarks that shape our sense of place. \nThe Little Market is located at 118 N. SUMMARY:So Much Color
DESCRIPTION:So Much Color \nBeginning June 24th at the Hillsborough Gallery of Arts\, is a show featuring 3 artists with very different processes and styles. The thing they do have in common is color – hence the show title\, “So Much Color”. \nKaidy Lewis has refined a process of abstract expressionism that brings to the canvas a feeling\, a subject\, or a current affair which she experiences as making no sense.  Her conversation with paint is a subjective\, exploratory\, and investigative process.  Lewis’ paintings are multi-layered and complex; they are a synthesis of inanimate objects and ambiguous figures\, within aesthetics of beauty\, color\, rhythm and design.  This semi-abstract visual art is an endeavor to deconstruct autobiographical chaos into some type of joyous humor that provokes the subconscious in the viewer and makes a space for connection.  Hints are embedded into the canvas in the hope that the conversation in paint quietens the ego and softens the noise of the world.  Lewis sees her practice as a health regimen that can create confidence\, community and compassion.  She was born in the UK and attended art college in London\,  and now works out of two studios located in the Raleigh/Durham area of North Carolina. \nMark Kinsella\, 3D fused glass artist\, combines color and shape with eye-catching results.  His conception of a glass piece begins with a vague idea of color or texture.  As he starts putting it together\, it takes on a life of its own and can end up being totally different than what he had in mind at the beginning.  For him working with glass is a metaphor for life.  When he works with glass\, he is reminded that life\, like glass\, is fragile.  And that something shattered and broken into a million pieces can be recreated into something whole and beautiful again.  Kinsella spent the majority of his life as a photographer in the private sector\, but in 2005 discovered the art of fused glass.  After starting with a small table-top kiln he quickly realized that he was meant to create larger and more complex works.  Kinsella has continued to learn through experimentation and through local workshops\, continually developing his unique style. \nFor this show Pat Merriman has ventured into different styles\, experimenting with pouring acrylic analogous colors mixed with glazing mediums and topping the pour with acrylic inks. It requires 2 days for this background layer to dry before she can add the focal piece or collage. One group of Merriman’s paintings will have a QR code showing that the title of each piece is a familiar song.  A second group is based on her love of the work of African American artist Richard Mayhew\, and is inspired by his strata and vivid colors. Merriman’s very bright landscapes evoke his style and are built of layers upon layers of acrylic color mixes using fan brushes\, sponges\, Q-tips\, and fingers. One piece is a large scene of Merriman’s memories of Emerald Isle\, North Carolina. \nCome visit the Hillsborough Gallery of Arts and be inspired by “So Much Color”.  The show runs from June 24 – July 20. The opening reception will be held during Hillsborough’s Last Friday Art Walk on June 27th from 6 – 9 p.m. The Jackson St. Band will play 60s & 70s American roots rock on the patio during the reception. \n  \nIf you’d like a chance to meet these artists and hear about their inspiration and process\, their Artist Talk will be held in the gallery on Saturday\, July 12th at 4pm. \n  \nAbout the Hillsborough Gallery of Arts: \nThe Hillsborough Gallery of Arts is owned and operated by 20 local artists and represents these established artists exhibiting contemporary fine art and fine craft. Established in 1754 as the seat of government for Orange County\, Hillsborough’s colonial legacy and signs of its importance in North Carolina and American history can be seen everywhere. \nThe tour begins at the Hillsborough Visitors Center\, located in the eighteenth century Alexander Dickson Farm House\, and guides visitors to a variety of historic places from the site of a 1790s African American-owned distillery to the 1840s Orange County Courthouse and the grave of one of North Carolina’s signers of the Declaration of Independence. \nThis is an in-person walking tour that sometimes crosses uneven terrain. The 1815 federal\, masonry edifice was the first of its kind in this once bustling trade town\, and thanks to the preservation efforts of our founder Richard Jenrette\, remains well preserved with several original family objects on display. \nCAHPT invites you to explore the site to learn about the design\, construction\, and maintenance of the estate as well as the lives of those\, enslaved and free\, who crafted and occupied the extravagant home and landscape from 1820 to 2018. \nVisitors are welcome to explore the site select Thursdays\, Fridays\, and Saturdays April through November. Guided tours will be offered Thursday & Friday at 1:00pm and 2:30pm. Tour times for Saturday take place at 11:00am\, 1:00pm\, and 2:30pm. DESCRIPTION:Located in Hillsborough\, North Carolina\, Ayr Mount strikes a startling figure in the historical town. The 1815 federal\, masonry edifice was the first of its kind in this once bustling trade town\, and thanks to the preservation efforts of our founder Richard Jenrette\, remains well preserved with several original family objects on display. \nCAHPT invites you to explore the site to learn about the design\, construction\, and maintenance of the estate as well as the lives of those\, enslaved and free\, who crafted and occupied the extravagant home and landscape from 1820 to 2018. \nVisitors are welcome to explore the site select Thursdays\, Fridays\, and Saturdays April through November. Guided tours will be offered Thursday & Friday at 1:00pm and 2:30pm. Tour times for Saturday take place at 11:00am\, 1:00pm\, and 2:30pm. All guests must purchase tickets in advance. \nTickets can be bought here: https://secure.jenrette.org/nx/portal/neonevents/events?path=%2Fportal%2Fevents \nThis is a potentially strenuous tour which includes climbing stairs\, traversing uneven terrain\, and enduring uncomfortable weather conditions and the presence of bugs or other wildlife. We regret that we cannot be responsible for those needing assistance and encourage all guests to dress accordingly.
