Hillsborough Classic Films: Umberto D., May 22.

May 22, 2022 @ 2:00 pm - 4:00 pm

The Hillsborough Classic Film Society and the Passmore Center will present Vittorio DeSica’s Umberto D. at the Passmore Center in Hillsborough on Sunday, May 22, at 2pm. There will be free popcorn, as usual.
Umberto D. is one of the greatest of the Italian neorealist films. DeSica himself considered it his best film; Ingmar Berman called it “the film that I perhaps love most of all and that I have seen a hundred times by now.” Martin Scorsese included it on his list of 39 films a young filmmaker must see, and Roger Ebert said of it: “It may be the best of the Italian neorealist films–the one that is most simply itself, and does not reach for its effects or strain to make its message clear.”
The discussion will be led by Martin Louis Johnson, professor of English and Comparative Studies at UNC and the author of Main Street Movies: The History of Local Film in the United States (Indiana, 2018).
Please put it on your calendar: Umberto D., Sunday May 22 at 2pm. The Passmore Center encourages you to sign up now by calling their desk at 919 245-2015. It isn’t essential, you can always sign in at the door, but the Passmore would like to have some rough idea in advance how many will be there. And don’t forget to sign up for the Film Society’s mailing list at
