Noir at the Bar HOLIDAY EDITION

December 14, 2023 @ 7:00 pm - 11:00 pm

DECK YOUR HALLS WITH A HOLIDAY-THEMED NOIR AT THE BAR

The quarterly literary event returns to Hillsborough with plenty of thrills to stuff your stocking

Yonder’s quarterly literary event, Noir at the Bar, returns to Hillsborough on Thursday, December 14. This iteration brings NYT bestsellers alongside up-and-coming crime authors, all of whom will combine to provide a thrilling evening filled with performances, prizes, and yuletide cheer.

Noir at the Bar is an international event that was started by Peter Rozovsky in Philadelphia following NoirCon as a single author event. St. Louis crime writers Jedidiah Ayres (Peckerwood) and Scott Phillips (The Ice Harvest) transformed it into what it is today: a multi-author event where crime writers perform their more salacious and titillating works. Eryk Pruitt has hosted the Triangle’s chapter of Noir at the Bar since 2014.

The event on December 14 will feature readings by NYT bestselling author S.A. Cosby (All the Sinners Bleed, Razorblade Tears); Philadelphia noir master Dennis Tafoya (Dope Thief, The Poor Boy’s Game); Lawrence Kelter, who authors the My Cousin Vinny franchise; bestselling author Melissa Bourbon (A Seamless Murder), Eryk Pruitt (Something Bad Wrong), Meagan Lucas (Here in the Dark); and newcomers Sarah Smith and Casey Stegman. The event is hosted by Tracey Reynolds.

“This one’s going to leave a mark,” promises organizer and Yonder co-owner Eryk Pruitt. “We love hosting literary events at Yonder because nothing pairs better than crime fiction and booze. Each of these authors is primed to deliver something memorable to the audience and the crowds that have gathered for these things are some of the most receptive I’ve ever seen. Y’all are in for it.”

While the stories read on stage have historically been incredible, Pruitt also points out that folks should prepare themselves for the stories the authors can tell before or after the event, over a cocktail (or two).

“SA Cosby is a master raconteur,” Pruitt adds. “The man was built for storytelling and he loves to do it whether on the Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon or posting up with a bourbon at the bar in Yonder. Folks should take advantage of the opportunity.”

This will be Yonder’s third holiday installment of the popular reading series. Authors often write something specifically for the event. Many books are often raffled off as giveaways and the authors are always more than happy to autograph any books you bring.

Yonder also publishes their own quarterly literary magazine, Dark Yonder, which showcases ten authors in each issue. The stories are submitted from authors around the world. The fourth issue was released in November. All four are on sale at local bookstores, online, and behind the bar at Yonder.

“You can tell the bartender to add it to your tab,” Pruitt says.
