Comedian Mo’Nique transformed to portray Mary, a hellish mother who abuses her illiterate teen daughter, Precious (Gabourey Sidibe). Despite continuous trauma, Precious finds support and starts to acquire her own agency. The film sparked intense controversy in the Black community about who gets to tell their stories and how.
