From Slavery to Freedom: The Power of Music | January 12, 2020

Join The Expedition School, the The Alliance for Historic Hillsborough & the Orange County Community Remembrance Coalition for a free presentation & performance by the incredible Mary D. Williams: “From Slavery to Freedom: The Power of Music.” This family-friendly event will take place from 3 – 4 pm on Sunday, Jan. 12 at The Expedition School. A combination of spirituals sang by those enslaved, to protest songs of the ongoing Civil Rights Movement, this presentation & performance will take you on an aural history tour of black history, highlighting the power of music in building community & resisting injustice & oppression. (Recently having performed at the Kennedy Center, learn more about Mary D. Williams on NPR here!)

Attendees will also have the opportunity to learn about the innovative project underway by Expedition School’s 8th grade, in which students are working with community partners such as the Alliance for Historic Hillsborough to highlight the often hidden but rich and impactful history of African Americans, from the period of slavery through present day.

Please invite your friends and neighbors to join us and to learn more about The Expedition School by coming early for a 2 PM tour, or staying for a 4 PM post-performance! More information at https://www.facebook.com/events/938830466504203/.
