History of Freemasonry in North Carolina

August 18, 2021 @ 12:00 pm - 1:00 pm

Discover the history of Freemasonry in North Carolina. Learn about Hillsborough’s Masons and their part in founding the UNC.
Hear about their role at Hillsborough’s Constitutional Convention of 1788. And take a behind-the-scenes tour of the nearly two-hundred-year-old Masonic Hall. Among the oldest masonic temples in the United States and listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the Hall has had countless uses, including a school, hospital, astronomical observatory, and opera house. It has also been home to Eagle Lodge #19 since its completion in 1825.
Your docents will be Speed Hallman, former Senior Associate Dean of UNC’s School of Journalism and past Grand Master of Masons in North Carolina, and Michael Verville, public historian, and preservation craftsman. They are active members of Eagle Lodge #19 and serve on the Board of Directors for the Historic Eagle Lodge Foundation, a nonprofit whose mission is the preservation of Hillsborough’s Masonic Hall.
Lunch and Learn virtual programs are free and open to the public
