M. Lynette Hartsell Reading: “Stanly Has a Lynching”
September 3, 2019 @ 6:00 pm - 7:30 pm
| FreeHartsell’s book outlines the 1892 lynching of Alexander Whitley, a white man, in Stanly County, NC in 1892. The work also examines the ways in which the media as well as religious, political, and social institutions have used ballads, fiction, and folklore tales for over a century to celebrate, rather than condemn the crime. Hartsell, a native of Stanly County and Whitley’s great-granddaughter, now resides in Orange County. Register by calling 919-245-2535.
