Star Party Astronomy Event
August 10, 2019 @ 7:30 pm - 10:00 pm
Come scan the heavens at the very peak of the August Perseid Meteor Shower with Hillsborough’s own astronomer, Jerry Vinski, from a sweet spot on the Burwell School lawn!
In the 19th century Reverend Robert Burwell occasionally led his students up Occoneechee Mountain to observe the heavens. Imagine the night sky with no electric lights to diminish the brightness of the stars! We can’t offer you that experience — but right on the Burwell Lawn, Jerry will pass out copies of the August sky chart and give viewers a look at the skies through his large Meade telescope.
Bring your own chair or blanket (and maybe some bug repellant ). Families are welcome!
Grab a bottle of water, stop by the Whit’s Frozen Custard stand, set up on the lawn, and settle in for the show.
At about 8:30 pm, it will be dark enough to start. Jerry promises we’ll be able to see Saturn and Jupiter plus at least one meteor fall. He’ll be sending his magical green laser pointer right into the sky to show us which constellations are in the summer sky. It will be a very different experience from just looking up at the sky from your backyard.
If the weather’s not cooperating on Saturday night, we’ll move the Star Party to Sunday night 8/11; same time and location. Check the website a few days ahead!
