Kindred Spirits: A Chamber Music Concert

June 8, 2023 @ 7:30 pm - 8:30 pm

| $20

The Kindred Spirits chamber music concert is a collaboration of old and new friends coming together to perform Olivier Messiaen’s signature work Quartet for the End of Time.  This piece was written while Messiaen was a French soldier imprisoned in a German army camp during WWII. The program will also include Joan Tower’s Tres Lent, her homage to Messiaen whose compositions she greatly admires.

Messiaen is considered one of the foremost composers of the 20th century. He is known for the complexity of his rhythms and his unusual take on harmony and melody. The Quartet composition is one that is beloved by musicians and its pairing with Joan Tower’s companion piece makes this concert a unique experience, especially in the intimate and sacred space of St. Matthew’s Episcopal Church in Hillsborough.

The Quartet for the End of Time features the uncommon harmonic blend of clarinet, piano, cello, and violin. The performers for the concert are clarinetist Jane Hamborsky, pianist Jennifer Wolfe, cellist Timothy Holley, and violinist Dana Friedli.  Tres Lent will feature musicians Virginia Ewing Hudson on cello and Jennifer Wolfe, again, on piano.
