Outlandish Hillsborough

October 11, 2019 - October 13, 2019

The Alliance for Historic Hillsborough and Ayr Mount Historic Site in collaboration with the Hillsborough Tourism Board will present Outlandish Hillsborough, a weekend of activities centered around Scottish heritage, colonial history and the wildly popular Outlander series. The weekend will include family-friendly festivals at the Ayr Mount Historic Site with a Cèilidh at Ayr from 10:00 to 4:00 on Saturday, October 12th and Outlandish Ayr from 10:00 to 4:00 on Sunday, October 13th.  The festivals will be accompanied by activities around town and local business tie-ins creating a weekend-long celebration.

Cèilidh at Ayr honors Scottish Heritage and Culture in a nod to the Kirkland Family that built the historic home of Ayr Mount named in honor of William Kirkland’s birthplace: Ayr, Scotland.  It will celebrate Scottish entertainment through performances by the NCSU Pipes and Drums Band, Celtic bands, Scottish Country Dancing, demonstrations, storytelling, plus a wee bairns area, Scottish food and vendors. In the fourth and fifth books of the Outlander Series, Drums of Autumn and The Fiery Cross, the main characters settle in a fictional Scottish community in North Carolina. The story intertwines with that of the Regulator Uprising that took place in and around Hillsborough in the 1770s, making Hillsborough a natural location for this event.

Outlandish Ayr will continue to celebrate Scottish Heritage while focusing on the colonial culture in which the characters lived here in North Carolina.  There will be colonial food and lifestyle demonstrations, British and Highland regiment reenactors, Highland music, history talks, demonstrations, Marketplace, readings from the Outlander books, food trucks, and much more. The extraordinarily popular Outlander books, written by Diana Gabaldon, have sold over 28 million copies worldwide. The award-winning television series by the same name is a hit on the Starz network and is going into its fifth season.  The Outlander series spans from 1743 to 1946 and takes place in Scotland, France, the Caribbean, and colonial America.
