Rededication of the Occaneechi Replica Village

April 23, 2022 @ 1:00 pm - 3:00 pm

Join tribal members and community volunteers for a ceremonial rededication of the Occaneechi Replica Village this coming Saturday, April 23rd from 1-3pm. The event will be held in River Park, located behind the Eno River Farmers Market in downtown Hillsborough. It is free and open to the public.

For over five years tribal members have worked with community volunteers, town and county staff, and the staff of the Alliance for Historic Hillsborough to reconstruct the Occaneechi Replica Village in River Park. Construction involved the building of a palisade and four ati (huts).  A work arbor, fire pit, lean-to, and cooking table were built. During the day tribal members and selected speakers will talk about the life of the area’s Indigenous Peoples and visitors will get a chance to experience a living village. “The reconstruction of the village speaks to our government-to-government collaboration, and it is wonderful to be able to tell the true history of Hillsborough’s Indigenous community,” says Beverly Payne, local tribal council member.

The event is sponsored by the Occaneechi Band of the Saponi Nation, Orange County, and the Alliance for Historic Hillsborough.
