Four Can’t Miss Farms and Outdoor Spaces

As the days get longer and temperatures start to climb, summer in and around Hillsborough offers plenty of reasons to brave the heat and spend more time outside. Just beyond downtown, several local farms and gathering spaces invite visitors to enjoy the scenery and make the most of the growing season. From berry picking and flower fields to cider tastings and soft serve, these nearby destinations offer easy summer outings for families, friends, and weekend explorers alike.

1. Eno River Farm
Address: 2127 St Marys Rd, Hillsborough, NC
Hours: Monday-Saturday: 10 a.m.-8 p.m. | Sunday: 11 a.m.-8 p.m.

Just a short drive from downtown, Eno River Farm combines fresh produce, community values, and wide open space. The farm was created with a focus on sustainability and preserving local farmland. Visitors can browse seasonal offerings, enjoy the countryside, and, later in the summer, take advantage of blackberry season, which typically runs from late June through August.

2. Firefly Farm
Address: 4911 Hunt Rd, Hillsborough, NC
Hours: Wednesday-Saturday: 9 a.m.-9 p.m. during U-pick flower season

For those looking for colorful blooms, Firefly Farm offers a memorable seasonal experience. The farm’s U-pick flower season runs from May through the end of August. Guests can visit the flower fields, meet friendly farm animals, and enjoy the peaceful rolling landscape. On Friday evenings in June, the farm hosts its popular “Fireflies on the Farm” gatherings, where visitors can watch lightning bugs flicker across the fields after sunset.

3. Botanist and Barrel
Address: 105 Persimmon Hill Lane, Cedar Grove, NC
Hours: Thursday: 12-6 p.m. | Friday-Saturday: 12-7 p.m. | Sunday: 12-6 p.m.

Those interested in local drinks and relaxed outdoor seating can head to Botanist and Barrel. Located north of Hillsborough, the cidery and winery specializes in dry fruit wines and farmhouse ciders made from locally grown fruit including blueberries, blackberries, peaches, apples, and muscadines. Botanist and Barrel has become known for its natural fermentation methods and laid-back atmosphere, making it a popular stop for an afternoon with friends or a quiet weekend outing.

4. Broken Spoke Farm
Address: 5601 St Marys Rd, Hillsborough, NC
Hours: Daily: 12-8 p.m.

Another local favorite for summer treats is Broken Spoke Farm. The farm stand features organically grown produce including asparagus, blueberries, blackberries, seasonal vegetables, and salad greens. During the warmer months, visitors can enjoy fresh soft serve ice cream, available Fridays through Sundays, with a rotating flavor offered each weekend.
